Richard A. Calvo, Sussex photographer

Richard A. Calvo passed away suddenly at his home in Millsboro Saturday, July 20, 2019.  He was 75, and leaves behind his beloved wife of 40 years, Lori.

Richard was the only child of Ricardo and Elvira Calvo of Jackson Heights, Queens, N.Y.  He attended NYU then interrupted his education for a tour in Vietnam where he was part of a close-knit group of PIO writers and photographers for the 25th Infantry Division newspaper, Tropic Lightning.  The group remains actively in contact until this day.  When he returned to the States, he received his bachelor’s degree from Pace University in Manhattan.

He discovered his talent and passion for photography in 1966 when he entered - and won - a photography contest in San Antonio, Texas just before he was deployed to Vietnam.  As a young man Richard made his living as a commercial photographer, a bilingual interviewer/placement counselor, followed by a career in the corporate world as a human resources executive.  He would eventually leave that world to pursue his art full time.  

And pursue he did!  His original and reproduction black-and-white prints have been sold all over the world.  The outdoor art fair circuit was a favorite for many years and, more recently, his black-and-white and his color photographs were featured in exhibitions at the Peninsula Gallery in Lewes.  He leaves behind a stunning body of work, but he leaves it behind too soon.

Services were private.  Friends are always welcome at his home.
