Richard A. Stevenson, proud veteran
Richard A. Stevenson, 91, of Lewes, passed away Saturday, Feb. 24, 2024, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes. He was born Feb. 10, 1933, in Tonawanda, N.Y., son of the late William Stevenson and the late Elsie Schwansfegger Stevenson.
Following high school and college, Richard proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and worked as a cryptologist in Japan.
His entire professional career involved sales, primarily with hoisting equipment and industrial sales. Many of his former employments were with the Columbus-McKinnon Corporation of Tonawanda, N.Y., and Columbus, Ohio; Waite Hardware in Worcester, Mass.; White Hardware of Framingham, Mass;, and finally, as a facilities administrator for Liberty Mutual Insurance in Hopkinton, Mass.
Richard was a devoted Bruins hockey fan and coached youth hockey. He also served as a referee, and later, he would have his son co-referee with him. In the early ‘60s, he obtained his private pilot’s license, something he always wanted to do.
He and his wife of 67 years, Joan M. Stevenson, moved to the Lewes area in 2002 from Ashland, Mass. Also surviving are his children, Lori Jo Hummel (Jonathan S.) of Jamaica Plain, Mass., and David W. Stevenson (Michelle Zuidema) of Lakeville, Mass.; and a brother, Gerald Stevenson of North Tonawanda, N.Y.
All services and burial will be private.
