Robert H. Detwiler, dedicated family man
Robert H. Detwiler, 95, husband of the late Justine L. Detwiler of Millsboro, passed away surrounded by his family Friday, March 22, 2024, at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. He was born Oct. 15, 1928, in Kimberton, Pa., son of the late Evelyn M. (Ibe) and Henry D. Detwiler Sr.
Bob was a graduate of Phoenixville High School and Elizabethtown College. He served honorably in the United States Army and was a member of American Legion Post 28 in Long Neck. Bob retired from the American Chemical Company (Amchem) in Ambler, Pa., as an accountant, and after retirement enjoyed working as a lifeguard for many years at the Howard T. Ennis School in Georgetown.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandsons, playing tennis, canoeing, bird-watching, gardening, fishing, and watching Penn State and Philadelphia Eagles football as well as Big 5 basketball. He took great joy in traveling with his beloved wife to visit relatives across the country and was excited to travel to Alaska and Hawaii in 2021 with his son to complete his bucket list of visiting all 50 United States! A kind and caring man, he will be dearly missed and never forgotten by all who knew him.
He is survived by his son Douglas Detwiler and his wife Tina of Maryland; and two grandchildren, Steven Detwiler and his wife Alexia of Texas, and David Detwiler of Maryland. Bob also has two sisters, Nancy Barringer and Janet Powell; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Justine Detwiler; his sister Joan Fox; and his brother Henry Detwiler Jr.
Memorial services are planned to be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 22, at the Green Tree Church of the Brethren, 1078 Egypt Road, Oaks, Pa. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Bob’s name to Long Neck CHEER Center, 26089 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, DE 19966.
