Robert I. George Jr., corrections officer
Robert I. George Jr. (Bob), 64, of Georgetown passed away Saturday, Dec. 19, 2020, at Nanticoke Hospital while fighting a battle with COVID-19. Bob was born Feb. 6, 1956, in Flint, Mich.
He was a graduate of Southwestern High School, class of 1974, where he played football and was a star wrestler. He then moved to Georgetown, where he graduated with an associate degree in criminal justice at Delaware Tech and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Wilmington University.
Bob took a job at Sussex Correctional Institute where he eventually became warden, for 30 years. In his job as warden he was responsible for establishing and the operation of the Sussex Violation Center. After retiring, Bob worked for The Nakamoto Group Inc. from Sept. 24, 2007 to April 12, 2010, as a compliance monitor of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Detention Facilities. He then worked for Core Civic as an associate warden at Otay Mesa Detention Center. He was the manager of Fishhook Trailer Park in Georgetown. Then his main focus was on being a grandfather, A.K.A. Baka to David.
Bob was a Mason, Scout leader for Troop 999, and the swim coach for the Sussex Central High School where he became a mentor and role model for many of his swimmers. He was voted Swim Coach of the Year after coaching only three years.
He loved playing golf with his buddies and was an avid Michigan fan, “GO BLUE”!
Bob is survived by his wife, Dora (Briggs) George; and sons Travis and Devin; and grandson David; his mother, Carol Brown and stepdad Edward Brown; sister Stacy Slater; nephew Christopher Slater; sister-in-law Eleanor and husband George Adams; nephew and niece, Alphie and Emma, and great-nephews Keane, Ollie, and Phoebe. He is preceded in death by his brother Richard George and nephew John L. Adams.
Due to COVID-19 the family is going to hold a Celebration of Life at a later date.
