Ronald D. Sams, avid sportsman

Ronald D. Sams, affectionately called “Pop-Pop” by family, passed away Thursday, Aug. 17, 2023, surrounded by loved ones at his home on the Indian River in Millsboro.

Born in Simpson, Kan., in 1932, he was predeceased by his parents, Oran and Helen Sams; and brother Larry Sams. He received his BS in biology after attending Kansas University and McPherson College. After graduating college, he went to work for Boeing Aircraft, where he met his wife Suzanne. Later, he joined Hercules in Utah and completed his career in Delaware, where he retired after 28 years.

Ron is survived by his wife of 66 years, Suzanne; his children, Trent, Craig and Tracy; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Ron was an avid sportsman. During his early years, he enjoyed coaching Little League, playing basketball and softball, camping and serving as a Boy Scout leader. His retirement years were spent enjoying golf, boating, fishing and cheering on the Kansas City Jayhawks.

Ron was active over the years in the Jaycees, the Masonic Lodge, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Sussex County GOP, where he served as the regional chair, as well as founder and chair of Republicans for Sussex.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 27, at Grace United Methodist Church, 300 E. Church St., Millsboro.
