Rotarians honor supporters of clinic in Ethiopia
The Lewes-Rehoboth Rotary Club was joined by the Long Neck and Rehoboth Beach Sunrise Clubs at their April 4 meeting at Irish Eyes in Lewes, to honor a special program of support for the expanding Robert M. Sinskey Eye Pediatric Eyecare Clinic in Addis Ababa, Eithiopia. Many local and regional leaders instrumental in sponsoring and supporting this medical clinic spoke at the dinner, and awards were given to those providing fundamental administrative or direct ocular services.
Dr. David Robinson of the Robinson Eye Institute in Lewes became involved with the Ethiopian eye clinic a few years ago when a friend asked him to help with an Ethiopian man who was blind. Robinson operated on the one eye that had promise for the man and helped restore vision. In the process, he became aware of the vision needs in the Ethiopian city of Addis Ababa and particularly the work of Dr. Kefyalew Regassa Gobena.
Dr. Robinson subsequently made trips to the African nation to help with surgery clinics. When the Rehoboth Beach Sunrise Rotary Club became aware of Dr. Robinson's work, members committed the club to raising money for construction of a new eye clinic encompassing up-to-date techniques and equipment.
Dr. Kay, as he is known affectionately and familiarly, was in town for a visit to the Robinson Eye Clinic recently, and the Rotarians took advantage of the opportunity to honor him for his work.
