Ruth Dodd Baxter, devoted mother, grandmother

September 20, 2024
Ruth Dodd Baxter, known to most as Mom-mom, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2024, surrounded by her family’s love. She was greeted by her husband, Jim; and two sons, Jimmy and Bill.

Mom-mom was the daughter of Frank and Elsie Dodd. She was born in Camden, N.J., Jan. 3, 1930, and moved with her family to Harbeson (Doddtown) soon after.

Mom-mom was married Dec. 19, 1948, and was a steadfast farmer’s wife. She was known for her dedication to mowing grass, caring for the chickens, and instilling the love of cats in her great-grandchildren!  Whether hosting an elaborate meal or a simple yet hearty lunch, Mom-mom could create a warm and inviting atmosphere instantly. In addition to her hospitality, she loved playing bridge, Chinese checkers, and dominos.

Mom-mom was preceded in death by Jim, Jimmy and Bill; her sister, Mary Conaway Baker; and dear friend, Bessie Wilson.

Mom-mom is survived by her daughter-in-law, Suzanne; and grandchildren, Katy (Brian) and their children Natalie and Nathan; Kristy (Jason) and their children Isaac, Elizabeth, Alden and Ellis; Jay (Jessica) and their children James, Jude, Justus and Jordan; Bill; Melissa (Mike) and their children Baxter, Sierra and Willow; and Brooke (Jon) and their children Wesley and Tristen.

Ruth was a devoted member of Grace United Methodist Church in Georgetown and enjoyed fellowship with the Willing Strivers. She was active in many community organizations including the Republican Women’s Committee and Delaware Farm Bureau.

Mom-mom was the epitome of Proverbs 31.

Ruth’s life will be celebrated at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21, at Grace United Methodist Church, Georgetown. Interment will be in Baxter Family Cemetery.
