Ryan Borden wins Dewey Beach Patrol 5K in 16:08
Ryan Borden, 17, of Chantilly, Va., entering his senior year at Freedom High, won the 18th annual Dewey Beach Patrol 5K Aug. 22, in the sizzling time of 16:08. There were 112 finishers in the race.
“I doubt we’ll have a school cross country season,” Ryan said. “I plan to run club this fall. My thing is outdoor track, and my event is the mile. I have a personal best time of 4:19, and I’m working hard so I can break 4:10 this spring.”
Colten Morris, 18, of Lewes, was second overall in 16:59, followed by Joey Andrisani, 37, in 17:26; Mike Sewell, 51, first masters, in 19:06; and Frank Ursomarso, 55, in 19:33.
Michelle Calvert, 40, of Glen Mills, Pa., was the first woman overall in 20:56. She was joined on the top 5 leaderboard by Kelsey Oliphant in 21:58, Alexis Oliphant in 21:58, Jessica Borden in 22:23 and Emily Stafford in 22:25.
Age-group winners female were: 9 and under, Lily Gawthrop 33:52; 10-13, Maya Yngve, 29:06; 14-18, Jessica Borden, 22:23; 19-24, Hadley Rhue, 23:14; 25-29, Kelsey Oliphant, 21:58; 30-34, Jessica Collier, 23:13; 35-39, Jennifer April, 26:25; 40-44, Michelle Calvert, 20:56; 45-49, Mary Rice, 23:25 (masters winner); 50-54, Joanne Nemes, 26:06; 55-59, Shelly Murray, 26:43; 60-64, Marjorie Adams, 27:17; 65-69, Normajane Davall, 40:45.
Age-group winners male were: 9 and under, Jackson Yngve, 33:27; 10-13, Greg Borden, 23:31; 14-18, Ryan Borden, 16:08; 19-24, Chase Wunder, 22:40; 25-29, John Jones, 21:22; 30-34, Mike Marciano, 20:08; 35-39, Joey Andrisani, 17:26; 40-44, Justin Welsh, 21:43; 45-49, Jason Pocum, 22:21; 50-54, Mike Sewell, 19:06 (masters winner); 55-59, Frank Ursomarso, 19:33; 60-64, Brian Daugherty, 22:16; 65-69, Rick Poppleton, 22:41; 70-74, Tom Keating, 29:08; 80 and over, Paul Kiefer, 47:48.
The second annual Watermel Run 5K is set for Sunday, Aug. 30, in Laurel. Race time is 8:30 a.m. at Janosik Park, Delaware Avenue and E. Front Street.
