Salesianum lacrosse dominates 13-6 and eliminates Cape from tournament

May 26, 2011

No offense, but no offense. That was pretty much the story line at Caravel May 25 as the Cape boys' lacrosse team lost to Salesianum 13-6 in the semifinal round of the boys' DIAA state tournament.

Cape finishes the season 13-5 while Salesianum at 14-1 will move on to play Tower Hill Saturday, May 28, in a rematch of last year's final won by the Hillers.

“The offense let us down," said Cape assistant coach Mark D’Ambrogi. ”We didn’t take advantage on a single man-up situation and we made bad decisions."

Sean Giampietro led the Sals with 4 goals. William Freeborn had 3 goals and 2 assists while Craig Zebrowski also had 3 goals. Dillon Walker added 4 assists along with 1 goal. Andrew Blundin and Kyle Gangemi added 1 each to the Sallies' total.

Cape was paced by Andrew Scrutchfield, who had 3 goals and 2 assists. Luke Benson and Jackson Monigle alsoscored for Cape while Sean Grogan added a goal.

The Vikings were shut out in the third quarter for the second time this season against Salesianum and at one point in the final quarter trailed 12-3 before a late-game flurry made the final score a more respectable 13-6.

Six goals scored would not have beaten Sallies in any of the games this season. The Cape offense went frigid twice in the early season, losing to Cold Spring Harbor 17-5 April 23 and Tower Hill 11-6 May 13.

“When the defense was six on six, we played all right," coach Jack Lingo said. “Early in the game we got killed because we were sliding too early, and they also got us in transition, mainly because we had trouble clearing the ball.”
