Salon on Savannah stunning with sundry services
After more than 25 years in the business, Karen Smith has finally branched out on her own to open Salon on Savannah in Lewes.
The Sam Villa-trained stylist has put together a talented team, offering a variety of services in a newly renovated space off Savannah Road just east of Wescoats Corner.
“I started in Wilmington when I was 17 years old, so I’ve been in this business my entire life,” she said. “This is my love. This is what I was meant to do.”
Smith, who’s originally from the New Jersey/New York area, has worked at Bad Hair Day in Rehoboth Beach and, more recently, at Village Salon and Spa in the Villages of Five Points. She’s a master barber and master colorist, specializing in blondes, balayaging and fantasy shades. She also offers Hairdreams hair extensions, which utilizes a laser to add a full head of hair extensions in just 45 minutes. She attended a three-day course in New York City to learn all about Hairdreams extensions. Tape-in and temporary hair extensions, temporary eyelashes and facial waxing are also services she provides.
Joining Smith are stylists Daniel Halvorsen and Justine Scott, and nail technician Marquita Herrera.
“I don’t really consider myself a boss here,” Smith said. “I just purchased a beautiful, peaceful, no-drama salon where everybody can come to work as their own LLC and rent space from me individually so they’re their own bosses.”
Halvorsen, who’s originally from the Baltimore/Washington area, is serving as salon manager. The Vidal Sassoon-educated stylist comes to the salon with decades of experience, previously working at Stephan and Co. in Rehoboth Beach. Like Smith, Halvorsen is also a master stylist who works with Schwarzkopf and Redken color. He offers Japanese and Keratin straightening as well as wig/hair replacement for men and women, and those with alopecia. He works with UltraTress hair extensions.
Smith and Halvorsen have each attended the Redken Symposium in Las Vegas, which is an intensive, week-long program for stylists from around the world.
“It’s a week of classes, and believe me, I went to all of them,” Smith said.
The salon carries Davines and Milbon products as well as Zenagen products for hair loss.
Men and children are welcome, Smith said.
Smith invested a lot into the salon renovations, including new drywall, wallpaper, lighting and furniture. Photographer Danielle St. Laurent, Smith’s niece, provided much of the artwork.
The salon is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. In terms of how the salon is handling COVID precautions, Smith said every station is wiped down, sprayed and disinfected between clients. Only one client per stylist is booked at a time, and private services can be provided on off days for extremely compromised clients who need an empty salon.
