Saunders asks for support in Rehoboth election

June 21, 2024

My name is Mark Saunders. I am a candidate for city commissioner in the City of Rehoboth Beach, and I'd like to introduce myself to all the stakeholders voting in the upcoming Saturday, Aug. 10 election.

My husband and I bought our first property on Sussex Street in Rehoboth in 2005, and a few years later purchased our current home in Country Club Estates. I have been a full-time resident since 2013. We own no other property in any other state. This is our home.

What first drew us to Rehoboth Beach is probably what still draws many others to visit or settle here. We noticed the beautiful beach and Boardwalk, picturesque lakes, clean streets, beautiful trees, charming in-scale homes in quaint residential neighborhoods, as well as a vibrant and amazing downtown area with shops and restaurants of all kinds. Even more so, we learned to know the people who live here, both full-timers and weekenders, who are by far the most kind, interesting and welcoming folks we've ever met.

I have been active in our community almost since arriving 19 years ago. I have been active in the Rehoboth Beach Homeowners’ Association, serving as president-elect during COVID, then as president for the two years after. I have also served the community as a member of several city committees, including my recent time as a member of the board of adjustment. I believe my time with RBHA and various committees has given me a pretty good idea what it is taxpayers expect from city government. I believe the role of commissioners is to steer the city in a direction of careful, stable and well-scaled growth.

I believe the taxpayers expect us to be financially prudent, and to establish a reasonable and sustainable balanced budget that continues to provide top-quality services to both residents and business owners. I believe that drawing more full-time and part-time residents to our city is a good thing, and should be encouraged.

Over the next 50 days or so, I hope to be able to reach out to many more voters and ask for your input. Please share your thoughts on what is important to you. What do you expect from your commissioners?

While I am not blind to the recent controversies, I do hope that if I am elected in August, I can help lead the board of commissioners forward, with new ideas and perhaps a fresh perspective. I believe Rehoboth Beach has a bright and prosperous future, and I hope to add something positive to that future as a member of the board of commissioners. Thank you for your consideration. Remember, last day to register to vote is Thursday, July 11, and mail-in ballots are available as of Wednesday, June 26.
