Designing the living space of a home is about creating eye-pleasing scenes in small doses throughout the different rooms. The owners of The Scene Shop on Baltimore Avenue want to help design those scenes.

Co-owners Kim Sullivan and Debbie Sharrocks will open The Scene Shop at 10 a.m., Friday, May 7. The women have never worked directly together, but both are educated in design, and they developed a friendship after sharing parallel career paths in the furnishing, decor and scene-design industry. Both worked for antique dealers and as designers for furniture retailers, and coordinated scenes at trade shows in the Washington, D.C. area.

Sullivan said this business is two years in the making. Originally, she said, the plan was for an online store, but Sullivan, who bought a home in Rehoboth two years ago, was in town and saw the space in The Shops at 33 Baltimore Ave. She knew immediately there was going to be a change in the plans, she said, adding that it wasn’t difficult to convince Sharrocks.

“I wanted a brick-and-mortar store. There’s not really a lot of energy in selling stuff online. I like the good vibes from working with people,” said Sharrocks, adding the online portion of the business will be ramping up soon.

Describing the store’s style as nontraditional modern, Sullivan said the furniture, lighting, textiles, art and other room-making details are a reflection of their personal style.

“Something that makes a scene,” she said.

Sharrocks agreed. The items are bold and beautiful, she said.

“It’s stuff the customer looks at and goes, ‘Wow,’” said Sharrocks.

The women said they will be very hands-on owners when it comes to decorating.

There will be rearranging and redecorating often, said Sharrocks. Someday there will be new wallpaper or nothing at all on the walls, but everything will have been moved around, she said.

“It gives the customers a different perspective. They might not have noticed a piece the first time around, but if they see it in a different location, that item could stick out as something they need,” said Sharrocks.

Sullivan said working trade shows involves putting things up, making them look perfect, tearing everything down and then doing it again the next day, but in a different way.

“We’ve been trained well,” said Sullivan.

The Scene Shop will be open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Saturday and Sunday, through May. Beginning in June, closing time will be 9 p.m., with days open being Thursday through Tuesday. Wednesdays will be by appointment only, said Sullivan.
