Science and Society lecture to host ‘The Big Picture’ author March 16
New York Times bestselling author Sean Carroll will discuss his book “The Big Picture: On the Origins of Life, Meaning, and the Universe Itself” in a live, online event from the Lewes Public Library and Browseabout Books at 5 p.m., Tuesday, March 16, via Zoom.
In “The Big Picture,” Carroll describes how the human-sized world fits into the bigger picture defined by the underlying laws of nature – in particular, how humans’ impressions of cause and effect, and the appearance of complex structures can be traced to special conditions near the Big Bang – and what it implies for meaning and mattering in the universe. Through Carroll’s historical anecdotes, personal asides and rigorous exposition, readers learn the difference between how the world works at the quantum level, the cosmic level and the human level – and then how each connects to the other.

The conversation will be moderated by Colin Norman, former news editor at Science, and Fred Dylla, executive director emeritus of the American Institute of Physics and author of “Scientific Journeys.”
Carroll is a research professor of theoretical physics at the California Institute of Technology and an external professor at the Santa Fe Institute. His research focuses on fundamental physics and cosmology, quantum gravity and spacetime, and the evolution of entropy and complexity.
