Sculpture finally in place in Lewes Canalfront Park

It was an unceremonious end after an unceremonious beginning for Lewes’ newest outdoor sculpture.

After a two-month delay, artist DeWitt Godfrey finished installing “Paviljoen” (Dutch for pavilion) in Canalfront Park July 20.

The steel sculpture was supposed to go up in May, but the cement pad was not built to specifications and cracked during installation. A new, stronger base was laid down. Godfrey returned July 18 and completed the job in about 48 hours with the help of Lewes Board of Public Works employees.

A dedication and artist talk had been planned for July 19, but the threat of rain and the fact that “Paviljoen” was not entirely finished yet forced the public art committee to postpone the event. As Godfrey was wrapping things up for the night July 19, he told the Cape Gazette that the art work was “the sculpture that just wouldn’t get finished.”

But now, it is complete and will remain in Canalfront Park until December.
