Sea Gals support Community Resource Center food rescue
The community of Angola by the Bay’s Sea Gals social group awarded the proceeds of its weekly mini farmers markets Oct. 11 to a local organization.
For years at the group’s monthly meetings, the Sea Gals have collected food for local charities. During the pandemic, when the group was not able to meet, volunteers started to collect food and monetary donations in the community parking lot once a month. This collection effort was then opened up to the entire community. This year alone, 10 carloads of food and $1,640 have been collected and delivered to the Community Resource Center in Rehoboth Beach.
Four years ago, the Sea Gals started sponsoring a mini farmers market to serve the community, with proceeds earmarked for food-based charities. The market has grown over the years, with four vendors participating this year: Old World Breads, Paul Cullen’s Italian Market, Adkins Produce and Rehoboth Bay Selects. Fees collected this year totaled $630, all designated for the center.
“We are incredibly grateful for the generous support we receive from the Sea Gals,” said Jo Allegro-Smith, Community Resource Center executive director. “Their monthly delivery of food and financial donations to our food rescue program ensures that no one goes hungry in our community! We truly appreciate the Sea Gals and the kindness of the mini farmers market vendors. Together, they have made such a difference in the lives of the families we help.”
Mini market participants in attendance for the presentation were David Adkins of Adkins Produce and Norris Hurley of Rehoboth Bay Selects. Paul Cullen and Keith Irwin were not able to attend. Organizers thank them for their donations and for coming every week during the summer, and they thank the many residents of Angola by the Bay who supported the vendors each and every week, rain or shine.
The Sea Gals were formed in 1975 as a group of women interested in fellowship, community awareness and philanthropy. Funds collected from projects throughout the year help provide scholarships, donations to local charities, a gift to the Angola by the Bay community, help for local families in need during the holidays, and other community projects that arise.
