In a tense thriller in Selbyville, the Sussex Academy girl’s basketball team walked away triumphantly following a 16-12 win over Selbyville Middle School.

“It was great to see the girls come together to show their character on and off the court,” said coach Holly Zorn.

Eighth-grader Reilly Mobilia led the way for the Seahawks with 12 points, including the go-ahead free throws to close out the fourth.

Trailing 6-5 to open the second half, Sussex Academy players showed they had some dog in them and took a 10-9 lead behind tight defense and Mobilia’s five points. The eighth-grader hit a momentous three to close out the third-quarter scoring.

Selbyville Middle staged a brief comeback and captured the lead for a few moments in the fourth, but Mobilia showed brightest in the final frame and registered six of her 12 points in the fourth quarter.  Two of those points came on game-winning technical free throws earned by her teammate Ashlyn Troxler, who dove for a loose ball but was met with a boot to the back.

“I’m proud of my team and proud to be their coach, and I think our effort out there was amazing,” Zorn said.
