One of the biggest rivalries in high school girls’ soccer is Cape Henlopen and Sussex Academy, and the Seahawks tallied a 2-0 victory over the Vikings April 5.
The game went back and forth, with no one really posing a legitimate threat for 57 minutes, when Mya Hastings took a pass from Natalie Roblero-Chavez and put it past Cape keeper Brynne Fox for the lead that would hold up for the rest of the game.
Five minutes later, Sussex Academy was awarded a penalty kick on a foul in the box. Debra Williams took honors and put it to the right corner past Fox for the insurance goal.
“Overall, it was a good enough performance to get the result,” said Sussex Academy head coach Chase Humphrey. “We struggled to find our groove in the first half, but started to piece things together in the second. We did well defensively to not give them many chances. They were an athletic team, but I feel like we controlled the match.
“It seems to be a highly anticipated contest each year, from what the girls were telling me, but we challenged them to not let the emotions get the best of them and just focus on their football. We want to hold ourselves to a high standard in how we play, and I think each game we are slowly getting there. Three matches in a week is not easy at any level, so [we’re] proud of their effort and ability to compete for a full 80 minutes today.”
“The girls played well and hard,”said Cape head coach Patrick Kilby. “It was unfortunate that we had to lose; however, these types of games will prepare us for a possible state tournament run.”
The Seahawks travel to Polytech Tuesday, April 8, and the Vikings will travel to the Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach (S.C) Wednesday, April 9.
