Sean Saxton to ride Delaware north to south

August 20, 2021

Dover High graduate Sean Saxton will attempt to ride the State of Delaware, a 146-mile challenge, beginning at 7 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 26, in partnership with the Cancer Support Community of Delaware. This ride will be the second annual for Saxton, who completed last year’s north-to-south trek from Wilmington to Fenwick Island in a time of 7:57:37.

According to CSCDE, “This is a very special and unique ride that will be an inspiration for many in the community who have been touched by cancer. The memorable event features a 146-mile challenge all throughout Delaware by triathlete and endurance junkie, Sean Saxton. In honor of Sean’s aunt, who he lost to colorectal cancer, Sean’s dedication to raising money for those impacted by cancer honors her life and legacy that she left behind. In 2020, Sean and his team raised almost $6K for CSCDE and he set an unofficial fastest known time on the course. He hopes this will continue to inspire others to complete the ride and tie their efforts to a cause that is meaningful to them.”

Volunteers and mile marker champions are still needed, and there are many ways you can still support Sean, such as donating online to the fundraising table, personalizing Sean’s bike, or adding to the pace car messages.

“Last year, I did the 146 miles in 7:57:37 and the clock stops when I finish, so this included all traffic lights and any short pit stops,” said Saxton. “I am looking to break that this year. No one has ever ratified an official cross-state time trial record on this course before (the course is designed by DelDOT and so are the small green signs that you see on the back roads). So I hope to be the first one to do it and make it official this year. Last year I called it an unofficial fastest known time.”

Maggie’s Mile PA

Last Friday night, the Cape girls’ track & field team and the Seashore Striders hosted the inaugural Maggie’s Mile, attracting 126 participants and raising $4,500 for the Maggie Browne Track & Field Scholarship that will be presented at the 2022 Cape Senior Awards. At the same time, a group of nearly 40 friends and relatives of the Browne family produced their own Maggie’s Mile in Connellsville, Pa., raising $1,500 for the cause. A really cool event that took place in two locations remembering our Maggie Browne.

The Seashore Striders will finish up August with the seventh annual Rehoboth Beach Fire Fightin’ 5K at 8 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 22, followed by the Sun Festival 5K & Biathlon at 8 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 29, and close out summer with the 31st annual Last Blast Prediction 5K at 7:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 4.
