During a brief ceremony Oct. 4 at Carltons Men’s & Women’s Apparel in Rehoboth Beach, Sen. Tom Carper, D-Delaware, was presented with a Champions of Main Street award from the National Retail Federation.

Carper was one of 21 members of the House and Senate recognized by the federation for leading the way on issues of significant importance for the entire retail industry during the 117th Congress.

According to a press release in July announcing the recognition, the Champion of Main Street awardees were chosen for their leadership on policies that help retailers and entrepreneurs create jobs in their communities and encourage a vibrant, sustained and healthy retail sector. Key issues include global trade, supply chain resiliency, consumer privacy protection, workforce investments and preservation of the corporate tax rate.

Trey Kraus, owner of Carltons and a member of the National Retail Federation, said Carper was recognized for his work related to tariff relief for small businesses.

Earlier this year, Carper, chairman of the Senate Finance Subcommittee on International Trade, Customs, and Global Competitiveness, and Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, a Republican, called for President Joe Biden’s administration to establish a more comprehensive exclusion process for imports from China subject to tariffs in order to allow more small businesses and manufacturers to access relief.
