Sending my brother off with a cookie

August 23, 2024

In December 2007, I wrote a story after my mother passed away about The Cookie - her famous chocolate chip cookie. It played an important part in my life and still seems to be following me. I have kept up the tradition to make sure family and friends all still had that cookie from her special recipe.

Every year since then, sometime in November, I would hear my brother Bill asking, “Are you baking cookies?” My reply was always the same, “Too early. Two weeks before Christmas.”

I believe Bill had a nose for cookie aroma. He would show up to the house and say, “It smells like cookies in here!” I would tell him, “Come on up,” and I would have a glass of milk and cookies on a plate. They were quickly devoured, I must say!

So, it would start. He would head out delivering the cookies, and every so often I would get a call from someone saying, “My bag was light!” So I knew that Bill (Mr. Quality Control) had been in the bag. Please note, he had his own bag! So I would staple some bags shut – but knowing him, he found a way to get in.

This past year, we went hunting for Rhonda, Ms. Sunshine of Rehoboth. It is always a joy to see her and give her cookies. Bill enjoyed it. Next, he would visit his friends at Lingos; that was always a joy to him, to bring in the cookies. And there were others, too.

So, come this December, I will be baking cookies, and always think of my brother and cherish all the memories. Love always to my brother, William J. Thoroughgood III.
