I am writing in response to Doug Kendall’s letter regarding seniors paying Sussex County school taxes.
I, myself, am a senior and consider myself lucky to live in a state where the real estate taxes are more than reasonable, where there is no sales tax and there is a fair income tax. I am a huge advocate that all of us, whether we have children or not, have an obligation to our society to have an educated populace.
Many of us will live long lives, and the graduates of public schools will be making decisions that affect our lives and the lives of our neighbors, friends and relatives. I want them to have the best education that can be had, and that takes enough money to do it.
If a senior is strapped and cannot afford the tax, I hope that the legislators will have some kind of program to exempt those who can’t really afford it. To think that we, as seniors, have no skin in the game is incorrect.
We have friends who never had children and they have supported education all their lives, and I rarely, if ever, hear them talk about what they have paid in taxes for education was not their responsibility or was a waste of their money.
