The first Rehoboth Greene Turtle 5K was run under exquisite fall weather conditions Oct. 12 starting on Rehoboth Avenue and finishing into the brisk north wind of the Rehoboth Boardwalk.
Mike Sewell led the field of 158 finishers in a time of 19:01.
The top 5 leaderboard for men included Sewell, Duane Williamson in 19:37, Matt Mace in 19:47, Doug Lynn in 20:29 and Rory McCleary in 20:40.
The women's race was won by Kathleen Moran in 22:20 followed by Becca Hemingway in 22:49, Marissa Washburn in 23:03, Amy Meyer in 23:54 and Jessica Roth in 24:17.
Race director Wayne Kursh of Races2Run presented Rehoboth Beach Main Street and Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Department each with a check for $750 following the race.
A group of regular runners who call themselves the Certified Running Nuts all ran with “Chi Got Chicked” red shirts in honor of Brandt Chi, who made the mistake of telling a reporter friend he didn’t like to “get chicked” in a race -beaten by a woman - and since that quote, Brandt, who is an automatic top 10 placer in a fast field of hundreds, has been beaten several times by elite women passing through the resort area.
Brandt was a good sport and ran behind his No. 1 chick, his wife Linda, the entire 5K, and both ran about 24:26.
The next Races2Run race at the beach is the inaugural Gabby Gobble 5K set for Thursday, Nov. 27, at Irish Eyes in Lewes.
