Cape junior pitcher Riley Shields tossed a two-hit, seven-strikeout game and the Vikings' batters slugged 11 hits to down the Senators 7-2 on opening day March 24 at the Cape softball diamond.
"It was nice to win that first game as the girls and coaches [Allison] Sulivan, [Candy] Brown and coach [Chip] Davis have worked really hard," said coach Jeff Evans. "We are young, but I thought our defense was solid, especially for an opener."
Freshman Raegan Jackson started off a six-run first inning when she cleared the bases with a double.
Kira Vitella went 3-for-4 while Sydney Ostroski went 2-for-3 with a double. Sophomore second baseman Jessica Evans added two hits for the Lady Vikings.
"Riley [Shields] had a nice debut and handled the elements well,'" said Evans. "The players are buying into a hitting philosophy. If the team can continue working toward daily improvement, can remain goal-oriented, can accept role-play, and can maintain chemistry - all big ifs - this can be an exciting, rewarding and fun year for our program."
Sophomore Anye Carter slugged a two-run homer for Dover to avoid the shutout.
The Lady Vikings travel to Lake Forest Friday, March 27, to face the Spartans in a Henlopen Conference matchup.
