The Peninsula Gallery announced Nancy McIntyre as its featured artist for June.
McIntyre grew up in Massachusetts, attended the Rhode Island School of Design and found a passion for the silkscreen printing process from Art Wood. Her silkscreens have depicted man-made places, like storefronts and porches, as well as natural subjects like skies and birds.
She tries to persuade viewers to find beauty in the ordinary, even in the shabby, especially when the light is right. McIntyre uses photographs for reference when in the studio, where she re-creates the way the light hit and the air felt in that moment. Each silkscreen edition begins with a full-sized master drawing, which is set under the screen as a guide for the hand-painted and hand-drawn stencils.
She prints through the stencils, with each layer being made up of different transparent colors fading into each other.
For this month, McIntyre has compiled a special collection of works that represent her journey as an artist. Aptly named Five Decades of Silkscreen Printmaking, this display features a dozen prints dating from 1979 to 2020. Subjects range from complicated city scenes with reflections on store windows to more recent small porch chair images. All of the works were chosen for their focus on light.
McIntyre’s Five Decades of Silkscreen Printmaking will be on display through the end of June. Works can be previewed at peninsula-gallery.com and are available for presale.
