SmashMouth’s second annual burger-eating contest set June 24
SmashMouth Burgers, and all its double-patty cheeseburger goodness, is hosting its second annual burger-eating contest Saturday, June 24.
“It’s a fun event for the community,” said Kerri Fox, CEO of Bethany Beach-based Aspire Consultant Group.
Fox is helping SmashMouth promote the event. She said everything is pretty much the same as it was last year – 12 contestants will have 10 minutes to eat as many burgers as possible. Last year’s winner, who is expected to be back this year, ate six-and-a-half burgers, while chugging a two-liter bottle of soda, she said.
“I don’t know how he did it,” said Fox, laughing. “I get full from just drinking soda.”
According to the SmashMouth website, the contest will be governed by rules from Major League Eating. The grand prize for the event is $250 cash and one free burger per month for one year. There will also be prizes for second and third place.
The biggest change to this year’s contest is the beneficiary, said Fox. SmashMouth founder Jamie Parsons died from cancer in the past year, she said, so 20% of all food and drink sales at the event will go to the Jamie Parsons Culinary Scholarship Fund. It helps provide a local resident with a culinary scholarship each year in Sussex County, she said.
Another change is the date. Last year, the contest took place Memorial Day weekend because it coincided with National Burger Day. There was a lot of traffic and that caused some delays for contestants getting to the contest, so it got moved to a regular Saturday in June, said Fox.
SmashMouth will be serving its full menu and the Big Chill Surf Cantina next door is offering $4 domestics and other drink specials.
The contest takes place at the SmashMouth truck, 19406 Coastal Highway, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the burger-eating contest beginning at 12:30 p.m. There will be a DJ and local sponsors.
