SoDel Cares 5K runners and walkers raise money for charity

40 competitors break the 25-minute mark

Nearly 300 runners and a couple hundred walkers cranked for charity June 15, at the sixth annual SoDel Cares 5K and noncompetitive one-mile walk.

Perry Shoemaker, 53, of Vienna, Va., was the overall winner in 18:33, and she held off a pair of Italian Joeys – Joey Andrisani, 41, 18:36, and Joey DeGregory, 18, 18:38. They were the only three runners to break the 20-minute barrier.

Amelia Shoemaker, 18, is her mom’s third daughter but was the second overall woman in the race in 20:12.

Rounding out the top 10 leaderboard were John Ramos, 21:00; Carly Jornlin, 21:07; Justin Gillander, 21:24; Joy Harrington, 21:53; Katie Bertolet, 22:05; and Ariel Simbana, 22:08. 

The top 40 runners broke 25 minutes, which is a pace of roughly eight minutes per mile.  

SoDel Cares is the philanthropic arm of the SoDel family, which is made up of four companies: SoDel Concepts restaurants, Southern Delaware Brewing, Surf Bagel and Highwater Management. SoDel Cares gives money to local organizations that assist children, at-risk youth and adults, and the elderly. The primary mission of SoDel Cares is to contribute in a positive way to the communities where it does business.
