Southern Delaware Orchestra sets concerts Aug. 10-11

July 14, 2024

The Southern Delaware Orchestra will take audiences Out of This World as it performs in concert at 3 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 10, at Mariner's Bethel Global Methodist Church, 81 Central Ave., Ocean View, and at 3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 11, in Cape Henlopen High School auditorium, 1250 Kings Highway, Lewes.

These concerts will also set a new milestone for the community ensemble. While the orchestra has previously welcomed brass, woodwinds and percussion to join strings on special occasions, this will be the group’s first concert cycle as a full-scale symphony orchestra. Auditions were held in the spring, and the ensemble’s musicians are excited to share their new sound and perform in new venues on a regular basis going forward.

“I am delighted to be joining SODELO at this transformational time for the orchestra,” said Stephen Mohr, head of the new percussion section. “As someone who made the transition from musician to lawyer, it has been wonderful to be able to return to my passion for music performance by joining the talented group of musicians in SODELO.”

“It is true that there is a wealth of beautiful music composed for string orchestra, but with our expansion to a full ensemble with the addition of woodwinds, brass and percussion, we gain access to a 300-year symphonic tradition that explores a seemingly limitless range of sonic color and texture,” said James Allen Anderson, director of orchestral activities at the University of Delaware and SODELO music director. “We can now share some of the world’s most iconic orchestral selections with our wonderful audience. The sky, as our space-themed program demonstrates, is the limit.”

Listeners will enjoy a mix of classical and popular celestial selections, including “Mars” and “Jupiter” from Holst’s “The Planets”; “Fanfare” from “Thus Spoke Zarathustra” by Strauss, as heard in “2001: A Space Odyssey”; and music from movie favorites like “Star Wars,” “ET” and “Apollo 13.”

Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for students.
