Speak Out against Hate to meet June 6

June 1, 2024

Speak Out against Hate will sponsor its fourth community meeting from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, June 6, at Lewes Public Library and online via Zoom.

A panel of of people who have worked to end the flying of the Confederate flag at the Marvel Museum will discuss the history of the flag at the museum, efforts made to remove it, and concerted actions that may be taken now toward its removal from the site outside the museum.

SOAH organizers believe that the museum, which is managed by the Georgetown Historical Society, is promoting a symbol of hate and division in Georgetown, which is 42% Latino and 15% Black, according to the 2020 U.S. Census.

Heading the panel will be Georgetown Mayor Bill West, who recently won a tightly contested election in which he advocated taking the flag down. Also on the panel will be Sussex County Councilman Mark Schaeffer; Jane Hovington, chair of the Richard Allen Coalition; Tom Irvine, attorney; and moderator Joseph Lawson, SOAH board member.

To register to attend in person at the Lewes library or on Zoom, go to eventbrite and search Speak Out Against Hate community meeting.

Speak Out against Hate is an organization recently established to address incidents of hate in Delaware and the lack of official response to them.
