Special Dogfish show to feature Japanese quartet LITE

Japanese instrumental quartet LITE will perform Saturday, March 28, at Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats in Rehoboth Beach.

Fresh off a performance at SXSW in Austin, the band will take the local stage in a rare show at 11 p.m.  The band only plays every two years in the United States and for very short tours.

Opening is the Columbus, Ohio band, The End of the Ocean, which will perform from 10 to 11 p.m.  There is no cover charge for the shows.  

LITE released its third full-length release “Illuminate” last summer. The album was recorded during two sessions – five tracks recorded and mixed by John McEntire of Tortoise at Soma Electronic Music Studios in Chicago and a further three tracks done with J Robbins (Jawbox) at Magpie Cage in Baltimore.

“Illuminate” signals a change in direction for the band with the addition of synths and myriad percussion instruments placing an emphasis on texture and rhythm while remaining faithful to the pillars of LITE’s trademark dual-guitar sound: precision, power and unforgettable hooks. Nowhere is this better exemplified than on the stop-start futuristic rock of “Image Game” or the swirling soundscapes heard on “100 Million Rainbows.”

Formed in Tokyo in 2003, the band – Nobuyuki Takeda and Kozo Kusumoto on guitar, Jun Izawa on bass and Akinori Yamamoto on drums – is cited as an influence by a new wave of young instrumental bands around the world. Extensive touring since their formation has won fans in Europe, the United States and beyond, thanks to their intense, incendiary live performances and a steady stream of EPs and albums has firmly established them as one of the most exciting bands to have emerged from Japan in the last decade.

The band most recently toured the United States twice with Mike Watt & The Missingmen and will appear at Fuji Rock Festival in Japan for the second time following their first Asian tour. They will also soon return to European shores.
