Springtime means shad in Delaware

March 21, 2017

Halleluia, spring is here!

That means the fish are starting to run in our rivers and creeks: spawning perch and rock in the rivers; herring and shad in the ocean and bays. Shad roe has long been a seasonal spring favorite and there have been times when running shad provided plenty of roe to be fried up with eggs for breakfast. The Delaware Bay and River host great runs of shad.

This photo from April of 1926 shows a skiff loaded with shad at a dock in Bowers Beach, near the mouth of the Murderkill River.
