Two members of St. Jude The Apostle Parish were honored for their service to St. Jude’s earlier this spring at the annual Diocesan Catholic youth ministry recognition dinner by the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington. Derrick Smith received the St. Timothy Outstanding Young Person Award and Yvonne Bailey received the St. John Bosco Award for Parish Youth Ministry.
The St. Timothy Award is the highest recognition for a diocese to confer to a junior or senior high school youth who lives as a disciple of Christ, sets a positive example for other youth, witnesses to their faith by exhibiting Catholic morals and integrity, demonstrates Gospel values through service to others, and exhibits Christian leadership in parish, school, and/or community settings.
Derrick has been a member of St. Jude’s since 2004. He has served as an altar server since that time, helped organize religious education inventory every summer, has been an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion since he was 16, has served on the Diocesan Youth Leadership Team in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades, and has helped organize and participated in Youth Group car wash fundraisers. Derrick is a senior at St. Thomas More Preparatory School.
The St. John Bosco Award is a diocesan award given to adult leaders who have been involved in youth ministry for five or more years and have been positive role models in one of several categories. St. John Bosco is the founder of the Salesian Society and is the patron saint of young people.
Yvonne has been a member of the parish youth ministry leadership committee since its inception three years ago. She has served as a catechist, classroom helper and hall monitor for Religious Education for 10 years. She initiated and coordinates the monthly Parish Family Liturgy. She represents family liturgy on the parish liturgy committee.
