In honor of the Kentucky Derby, and despite looming rain clouds, the Starboard hosted the inaugural Broomstick Derby Run May.

Some participants were dressed in formal derby wear, but most enjoyed a laid-back look more suited for the Starboard. The race took all of a few minutes – the track began at the Starboard, took a right at New Orleans Street, then a right onto Bayard Avenue and then another right onto Saulsbury Street before finishing up back at the Starboard parking lot.

Starboard owner Steve “Monty” Montgomery said 200 broomstick horses were made for the event. He said he was surprised by the turnout.

“It was a great event,” he said after the race. “Now we know what to expect, so we can make improvements for next year.”

The winner of the race, Lewis Gebhart, snagged a $500 gift card, while second prize was a $250 gift card and third prize was a $100 gift card.
