State fair carnival to host sensory-friendly hours July 23

July 8, 2024

The Delaware State Fair will hold special sensory-friendly hours at the carnival from 1 to 5 p.m., Tuesday, July 23, at the fairgrounds in Harrington.

This inclusive event aims to provide a comfortable and enjoyable experience for individuals with autism and other sensory-processing sensitivities, allowing them to experience the fair in a supportive environment.

During these hours, the carnival will feature reduced lighting, lower music volumes and minimized use of loudspeaker announcements. These adjustments are designed to create a more welcoming atmosphere for guests with environmental sensitivities, ensuring they can fully enjoy the rides, games and attractions without the usual overwhelming stimuli.

"Our goal is to make the fair accessible and enjoyable for all members of our community, and this sensory-friendly event is a significant step in that direction," said Danny Aguilar, Delaware State Fair general manager.

In addition to the sensory adjustments, the fair will offer designated quiet areas where guests can take a break from the carnival's activities if needed. These spaces will provide a calming environment for anyone who may become overwhelmed.
