Stephen H. Smyk honored upon Coast Guard Auxiliary retirement

December 19, 2019

Stephen H. Smyk retired Dec. 9 from the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.

The father of Rep. Stephen T. Smyk, R-Milton, he has been officially assigned under Coast Guard orders to Marine Safety Detachment Lewes for 12 years.

The Coast Guard considers the auxiliary a force multiplier that can be found in many activities, from instructing at the academy to assisting in boarding vessels. Smyk was certified for recreational vessel exams, telecommunications specialist, telecommunications operator, watch stander, supervisor of the search and rescue detachment station at North Bowers Beach, and fingerprint and photograph technician.

Also retired from the Delaware State Police, Smyk remains active in the community. He serves on the financial oversight review committee for Indian River Volunteer Fire Co. Station 80, as secretary for his property owners’ association, and as secretary to Fraternal Order of Police Sussex Lodge 2.
