January 4, 2023

Former 20th District Rep. Steve Smyk of Milton will start a new job as chief deputy in the Sussex County Sheriff's Office, replacing the retiring Eric Swanson. Smyk is expected to be sworn in and start his duties Monday, Jan. 9.

Smyk, a Republican, served as a state representative for 10 years before running for the District 6 Senate seat vacated by the retiring Ernie Lopez. He was defeated in the 2022 election by Democrat Russ Huxtable.

Smyk is a retired Delaware State Police trooper, serving for 24 years, and is also a veteran of the Delaware Army National Guard. He was twice named Trooper of the Year by Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

During his tenure in the General Assembly, Smyk championed several bills dealing with law enforcement.

The Sussex County Sheriff’s Office, headed by Sheriff Robert Lee, serves papers for the courts and holds sheriff's sales for non-payment of taxes, mortgage foreclosures and all other court orders.
