Lewes volunteer firefighters Robbie Stephens, Aidan Gause, Dylan Sharp and Trevor Feist stepped into their full turnout gear to run the Stop, Drop and Run 5K in memory of their friend Tim McClanahan, who died during a training exercise last year.
It was a hot and humid morning June 11, as 178 runners and walkers stepped off from the Lewes Fire Department. Though they ran at different paces, the Lewes firefighters crossed the finish line together at 43:00.
Several members of McClanahan’s family also walked the race in his honor.
Winning the race was 17-year-old Will Bullock of Marietta, Ga., in a quick time of 17:16. He was chased to the line by Martin Rodriguez of Selbyville in 18:15, Moiber Rivera of Georgetown in 19:11, Francisco Puac of Georgetown in 19:38 and Joey Andrisani of Wilmington in 20:19.
The women’s race was won by Dawn Rhee of Pittsburgh, Pa., in 23:02, good enough for 17th overall. Rounding out the top five were Liz Nicholson of Hockessin in 23:12, Olivia Bergenholtz of Medford, N.J., in 23:16, Rebecca Pepper of Lewes in 23:16 and Mardiny Ung of Elizabethtown, Pa., in 23:50.
Winning the masters races were Christopher Goheen of Severna Park, Md., in 21:20, and Liz Nicholson in 23:12.
The next Races2Run event in southern Delaware is the inaugural Stomp Out Cancer 5K at the Old Milford Middle School in Milford at 7 p.m., Friday, June 16. The next Ten Sisters Series race is the 16th annual Northbeach 5K Sunday, June 25, in Dewey Beach.
