Stormwater management seminars to start Sept. 18

August 27, 2024

The Sussex Conservation District, in partnership with the University of Delaware Cooperative Extension, will offer a series of free seminars aimed at improving water quality through effective stormwater management and best management practices. Sessions will run from 10 to 11:30 a.m., at the Carvel Research and Education Center near Georgetown.

Stormwater 101 is set for Wednesday, Sept. 18. Jessica Watson, SCD sediment and stormwater program manager, will provide an overview of the stormwater program in Delaware, including regulations, types of stormwater systems, required maintenance and enhancement options. "We encourage communities and property owners to become informed so they can identify problems early, before they become costly to repair," Watson said.

Turfgrass Fertilizer Best Managment Practices will be the topic Wednesday, Oct. 9. John Emerson, UDCE turfgrass extension agent, will discuss the new Delaware Livable Lawns fertilizer guidelines and address common misconceptions about turfgrass fertilization. "If you are new to Delaware, we want you to learn how your actions on private land, at home and in community open space affect water quality for all in Sussex County," said Emerson.

Enhancement and Funding Opportunities is set for Wednesday, Nov. 20. Blake Moore, UDCE natural resources extension agent, will review how to attract beneficial insects and enhance stormwater facilities with native plants. Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Conservation Program staff members Ben Coverdale and Holly Walker will review watershed-based best management practices funding opportunities.

Preregistration is required. Delaware nutrient management credits are pending.
