Students learn about safely sharing the road with trucks

In December, the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute team visited Sussex Tech High School to present its Sharing the Road with Trucks Safety Program to driver education students.

The program was designed to educate young drivers on how to safely share the road with large trucks. While the course includes in-person instruction and videos, the greatest impact for students is experiencing the hands-on demonstration.

Students sit in the driver’s seat of a large truck to experience the driver’s perspective, gaining firsthand insight into blind spots and no-zones, which enhances their understanding of the challenges truck drivers face.

The program was created by a team of large-truck safety experts and commercial motor vehicle drivers from VTTI.
