‘Summer of Soul’ to open at Cinema Art Theater July 2

July 1, 2021

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present “Summer of Soul,” a documentary that examines the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, starting Friday, July 2.

In his acclaimed debut as a filmmaker, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson presents a powerful and transporting film – part music, part historical record – created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture and fashion. Despite the top-level talent that performed at the festival, the concert went largely unremembered. According to the opening titles of the film, the footage sat in a basement for 50 years. It has never been seen.

Thompson and his team of producers combed through more than 45 hours of footage to bring the film to life. The feature includes never-before-seen concert performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King, The 5th Dimension and more. “Summer of Soul” is a 2021 Sundance Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize winner.

Screening times are 3:30 p.m., Friday, July 2; 3:30 and 6:30 p.m., Saturday, July 3; 3:30 p.m., Sunday, July 4; and 6:30 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, July 7 and 8.

Admission is $8 for members and $11 for nonmembers.

Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online at rehobothfilm.com. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater starting 30 minutes prior to each screening.
