Surf fishing and beach driving classes available at Delaware Seashore State Park

Fall programs offered in September and October
September 2, 2015

With summer winding down and the fall fishing season just around the corner, it is a great time to learn the basics of driving on the beach and fishing in the surf.

Delaware Seashore State Park will be offering several surf fishing programs and beach driving clinics throughout the fall to help both residents and visitors that are interested in participating in this popular pastime.

The “Introduction to Surf Fishing” program is a three-hour program led by state park naturalists. The program covers current rules and regulations, fish identification, casting techniques, tips on when and where to fish, and of course, the opportunity to catch (and release) the big one!

The program will be offered Saturdays, Sept. 12 and 19 at 9 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 11, at 9 a.m., and Sunday, Oct. 18, at 1 p.m. Participants must have a valid fishing license and a F.I.N. number, and must be at least 10 years old (those under 16 must be accompanied by a paying adult).

The “Beach Driving Clinic” will be offered Sunday, Sept. 20, at 9 a.m., and Sunday, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m. This program will cover current rules and state requirements, and the opportunity to practice driving on the beach under the watch of state park personnel.

Participants must have a valid surf tag and the required equipment with them in order to take part in the driving portion of the class.

Preregistration is required for both of these programs. Reservations can be made by calling the Indian River Life-Saving Station at 302-227-6991.
