Sussex Academy sophomore Shelby Manlove and senior Sanne Elling teamed for 13 goals and three assists in a 17-6 victory over Caesar Rodney.
The two teams were coached by former Cape Henlopen state champion players Gina Voss (Caesar Rodney) and Taylor Gooch Gibbs (Sussex Academy).
The Seahawks came out on fire, scoring the first eight goals of the game. The first half ended 11-1. The Riders mounted a small comeback in the second half, managing five goals, but they couldn’t overcome the large lead.
Shelby Manlove’s seven goals and Elling’s six goals led the way. Lily Manlove scored two goals, while Marley Rohe and Callie Short each scored one. Assists were credited to Shelby Manlove with two, and Emiley Bisaha, Elizabeth Merrick, Short, Rilyn Lehman and Natalee Petty each had one helper.
Elise Hensley and Thalia Brown each had two goals to lead the Riders.
CR’s Ava Brown made seven saves, while Morgan Leeper made three stops for the Seahawks.
“CR brought some great competition,” said Gibbs. “We just went in determined, focused and knew what we needed to do in that game, and that drove our speed and intensity for the game. We saw the things that we need to work on as well as a lot of strengths that we have. It wasn’t an easy win, but it was a win that brought a lot of motivation heading into our practices to continue to work and get better heading into our game next week.”
Sussex Academy will host undefeated Cape Henlopen at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 4.
