Sussex Academy hockey gets shutout win over Woodbridge

October 24, 2024

Their were no nine lords a-leaping, but the Seahawks hockey team leapt to their ninth shutout of the season with a 9-0 win over Woodbridge Oct. 21 at the Sussex Academy athletic complex.

Emma Campbell started the scoring at 5:03 in a lackluster first period where both teams struggled to get the advantage. Shelby Manlove hit the board twice in the second period surrounding a tally by Morgan Leeper. Junior Taylor Lowe scored her first goal to finalize the first half.

Lowe continued her hot streak in the second half, scoring the first goal of the third period at 5:34. Rilyn Lehman scored off a pass by Manlove at 2:03.

Lowe wasn’t finished, as she struck first in the fourth stanza off a corner insert from Mady Lehman. Eighth-grader Audrey Snyder added the ninth goal from Manlove at 11:36.

“Coming into the game, I knew Woodbridge was a gritty team and well conditioned,” said Lowe. “I just played hard and looked up, using my teammates as much as I could. Going forward, we need to keep looking up as much as possible and staying composed.”

“I think we hustled to the ball, spread out and looked for each other,” said corner inserter Mady Lehman. “We got it together in the second period. We have great communication on the corners. I trust my teammates and they trust me to get the ball to them how they want it.”

“We had lack of communication in the first period,” said Seahawks head coach Caitlyn Hardy. “After we got on the board, we were good. We worked on some things we needed tonight. Hopefully it carries us into the tourney.”

The Seahawks outshot the Raiders 16-2 and held a 10-4 edge in penalty corners.

Kacie Rawlings made two saves in the cage, while Woodbridge keeper Rylie Murray stopped nine shots.
