The Sussex Academy boys’ basketball team nearly won its fifth game in a row Jan. 17.
Unfortunately for the Seahawks, an arrow in the form of a made three-pointer with just seconds to go shot down their winning streak and gave Selbyville Middle a 30-28 lead they would expand to 32-28 before all was said and done.
Selbyville Middle jumped out to an early lead, but Sussex Academy took a 28-27 lead after eighth-grader Ben Tollett connected on a pair of free throws with less than 15 seconds left.
However, following a pair of missed free throws by the Indians, the home team earned an in-bound. With just 1.6 seconds left, the Indians’ Cameron Elligson connected on his second three of the game to give Selbyville a 30-28 lead.
“I told the team that these are the types of losses that are going to make us better,” said Sussex Academy coach Recordo Nock. “You’re either going to win or you’re going to lose, and losing on a last-second shot hurts. I told them not to hang their heads because they played great.”
