Sussex Academy students host Chancery Court magistrate

Sussex Academy students interested in careers in law spent a meaningful and educational hour learning from Magistrate in Chancery David Hume IV.

Hume visited the public charter school’s secondary campus  March 21, where he shared his educational background, professional experiences and described his current role in the Court of Chancery.

Students then asked questions about the key qualities of successful lawyers, his collaboration with government agencies, the impact of technology on the legal system, internship opportunities and leadership advice for the future.

Junior Abigail Tatman, who said she is interested in a career in history, said Hume shared very helpful background information that can transfer well to her planned occupation.

“I did a slight bit of background research, mostly focusing on the pre-arrest program he helped to develop, and he gave me a very refreshing response about how when you feel something is right, you should fight for it,” Abigail said.

Further, Abigail said, the welcoming and kind nature Hume exuded made him approachable.

“His devotion and advice about staying responsible and available is something I will hold with me throughout my future career,” she said. “I'd say I am very honored to be able to converse with him today.”
