The Sussex Bird Club will meet in person at 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 12, at the Lewes Public Library. An online option will be available for those who prefer to watch via Zoom.
Shorebirds are one of those groups that birders, new and advanced alike, can find challenging. There are numerous species, their plumage characteristics can be subtle and variable, and viewing conditions may not always be ideal. However, there are plenty of ways to make the process of identifying these birds easier and less overwhelming.
At the Sept. 12 meeting, Mike Hudson will share his expertise on shorebird identification. A Baltimore resident, Hudson has been birding Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania since he was 10 years old. He has had a particular love of shorebirds and shorebirding for some time, a love started and grown by his mentor Bill Stewart.
Hudson spent four years as a volunteer bird bander at the Foreman’s Branch Bird Observatory in Chestertown, Md., has worked as a field biologist and science educator, and is a former editor of North American Birds.
In his spare time, he contributes to his local birding communities as an eBird reviewer in Delaware, a county-level coordinator for the ongoing third Maryland-DC Breeding Bird Atlas, and current vice president of the Delaware Ornithological Society.
The session is available to attend in person or through Zoom. Seating is limited, so registration is required, indicating attendance in person or online.
