Sussex Tech Adult Education has established an articulation agreement with the Indian River School District for its certified nursing assistant program.
Seniors are attending evening classes, and their clinical experiences are scheduled for nights and holidays to accommodate schedules. The students or their districts are paying a $100 per student fee. The course balance for the student is funded through an allied health grant that was written by Sussex Central High School nursing instructor Christine Frazier.
Two Sussex Central High School students will begin the Sussex Tech Adult Education Phlebotomy program in January. The CNA course is full and there is a waiting list.
“We are happy to report that this month, the first Indian River School District/Sussex Central High School dual-enrollment CNA class finished with a 100% pass rate. The students are certified to work as nursing assistants in the state of Delaware. This group of students was a joy to work with, and we are thankful for our partnership with the Indian River School District,” said Kelly Whaley, director of Sussex Tech Adult Education.
Frazier said she is proud of her students’ hard work. “It has been great to partner with Sussex Tech to get eight of our Allied Health Pathway students certified as nursing assistants,” she said. “This was funded through a Department of Labor grant so the students could have a true work-based learning opportunity during the second semester of their senior year. Students will now start working in nursing homes to apply their new skills, and most have plans to start nursing school locally after graduation from Sussex Central in June. I am so very proud of the hard work and dedication our students put forth these last few weeks.”
According to the agreement, the district will record the credit(s) earned in this program on the students' high school transcripts.
