Sussex Chem-Dry offers new, safer carpet and upholstery cleaning option

Ward Culver recently opened Sussex Chem-Dry, in Millsboro, which serves all of Sussex County. Culver said his goal is to change the attitude of the public about carpet cleaning because of the problems associated with other cleaning methods. He said customers are often discouraged by the poor results and damaging effects that may be caused by steam, shampoo and dry cleaning methods.

Chem-Dry, however, uses a highly carbonated solution. The patented carbonation process allows the solution to penetrate each fiber and emulsify the dirt and stains. As the solution turns dirt and stains into a liquid, called emulsification, the carbon dioxide actually lifts them to the surface for easy extraction. As a result of using the carbon dioxide, excess amounts of water are eliminated, thus preventing damage from overwetting.

Chem-Dry offers a number of distinct advantages that other methods cannot, said Culver. For instance, carpets dry in one or two hours instead of days, there are no dirt-attracting residues, virtually all stains can be removed and it’s economical.

Another benefit of Chem-Dry is the texture and feel of the carpet after it is cleaned. Steam, shampoo and dry cleaning may leave carpet coarse, brittle or stiff, said Culver. “Chem-Dry actually makes carpet fluffier and softer,” he said. “The mildness of the Chem-Dry solution does not remove the natural oils from the carpet that give the soft texture.”
