Sussex County Slam Dunk Reading Challenge to start Nov. 7
Sussex libraries are joining forces again to bring a new reading challenge to county residents while providing exciting incentives, thanks to the support of Slam Dunk to the Beach, set for Monday to Thursday, Dec. 26 to Dec. 29, at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes.
Beginning Monday, Nov. 7, the Sussex County Slam Dunk Reading Challenge encourages all students in kindergarten through 12th grade to make reading and literacy a priority.
Students enrolled in the challenge will log their time spent reading. Every five hours of reading time earns a ticket for the grand prize raffle. Participants are free to read books, audiobooks, newspapers, newsletters, magazines or any another format that sparks their interest. A total of 50 raffle winners will score tickets to a Slam Dunk to the Beach game Tuesday, Dec. 27. The challenge runs through Friday, Dec. 16.
The Sussex County Slam Dunk Reading Challenge is available online; participants may register on Beanstack at sussexcountyde.beanstack.org or by downloading the Beanstack app. Those who participated in previous Beanstack challenges such as the Sussex Summer Reading Challenge may simply log in to their existing accounts to register.
For those new to Beanstack, registration is simple and requires little information. Whole families may register together to keep the tracking easy. For help accessing a Beanstack account, contact a local library.
The partnership between Sussex County Libraries and Slam Dunk to the Beach emphasizes the importance of both literacy and sports for students of all ages.
“The public libraries in Sussex County support their communities in a number of different ways, but promoting a love of literacy for all ages will always be our top priority,” said Rachel Lynch, Sussex County librarian.
As public library services evolve and grow, library staff are committed to finding new avenues to engage with readers in innovative and equitable ways that create a shared sense of community and love of reading for all Sussex Countians.
