Sussex Gardeners learn about best practices for environment

April 2, 2024

When Sussex Gardeners met March 21, the program focused on Arbor Day and Earth Day, and what people can do to help protect the environment.

Presenter Karen Kollias is a Sussex County Master Gardener who recently received a lifetime achievement award from Master Gardeners. She refers to herself as an intentional gardener. She focuses on climate change gardening, paying close attention to including native plants and pollinator-friendly plants, shrubs and trees. Kolllias warned against the introduction of invasive species into the garden, and suggested that people strive to reduce lawn space and increase native plantings.

Plants that fit her criteria for environmentally successful gardens include amsonia, fringe trees, hawthorn trees, native grasses and goldenrod. A question-and-answer session followed the presentation. The program was well received by the Sussex Gardeners, who were able to take home various informational handouts Kollias provided.

After the presentation, President Dianne Shawley called the business meeting to order. The budget for fiscal year 2024-25 was presented by Treasurer Elaine Taylor and approved by the membership. Members discussed plans to install decorations at the Zwaanendael Museum ahead of the Lewes Tulip Celebration.
