Sussex Gardeners learn about dragonflies’ role in the ecosystem
The Sussex Gardeners met Oct. 19 at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Rehoboth Beach.
President Dianne Shawley reported on the club’s participation in Harvest of Discontent: 1773, presented by the Lewes Historical Society. Dressed in period attire, members sold baked goods, plants and cider. Proceeds from the sales help support various club projects.
After the business meeting, guest speaker Mike Moore gave a presentation on “Dragonflies: Jeweled Hunters of the Skies.” A retired biology professor from the University of Delaware, Moore is president of the Delaware Ornithological Society and vice president Dragonfly Society of the Americas. His intense interest in dragonflies and their role in the local ecosystems is coupled with his passion for photographing them throughout Delaware and elsewhere. His interesting and informative program was followed by a question-and-answer session.
